Any yarn can be used, and made to any size. For example, you might choose a shorter length as a head wrap where the lower part fits more closely under the chin. Or a longer length that allows tucking under a coat. Any size makes a good looking scarf just hanging about the neck. And best of all, they knit up quickly and make great gifts.
As a rule of thumb, plan for 3 - 50g balls in sport to bulky weights, 2 - 50g balls in finer weights. More specific yardage and gauge guidelines for popular yarn weights and scarf sizes are included in the pattern instructions. Written stitch instructions.
